Philly Beer Week is the largest beer festival of its kind in the country, spanning the entire city. For the beer lover it’s like Chanukah, Christmas, and Festivus all rolled into one—10 days of pure beer drinking bliss, with food, and more events than one human without a TARDIS could possibly attend. Trying to figure out which of the hundreds of events you can make can be challenging. Thankfully, there is an app for that (available for both iPhone and Android devices). While you wait for that to install, here are some events that you’ll definitely want to check out.
Start off Philly Beer Week’s in style at the opening festival. Mayor Nutter, Ben Franklin, and Joe Sixpack will be in attendance for the ceremonial tapping of the first keg. Witness the spectacle that is the arrival of the Hammer of Glory and sample beers from regional breweries. Tickets will not be sold at the door and must be purchased in advance.
Philly Beer Week Second Annual Forum of the Gods
A round table talk featuring brewing “Gods & Goddess” Carol Stoudt of Stoudt’s Brewing; Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery; Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing; Brian Grossman of Sierra Nevada Brewing; and Larry Sidor of Deschutes Brewery. In addition to drinkable surprises from the “Gods,” guests will experience Exportation, the Philly Beer Week collaboration porter brewed by local beer luminaries in 2010 at Sierra Nevada and aged in Russian River barrels for one year. Tickets can be purchased here.
Punk Rock & Sandwiches
Join Dogfish head brewer, Sam Calagione, and Sean Paxton, the Homebrew Chef (of Brewing Network fame), at Nodding Head for lunch to celebrate Philly Beer Week. Beers from Dogfish Head and Nodding Head will be paired with great food from Sean. Tickets are limited and are available by phone or at the pub.
Bike the Ben
A leisurely bike ride starting at the Race Street Cafe and crossing the Ben Franklin Bridge with a stop beforehand to sample bridge themed beer from from Trophy Bike’s custom-made Dutch Bakfiets cargo bike and bar. Contact mcget(@)aol.com to sign up.
With Love Beer Garden @ Four Seasons Hotel
From June 6th to the 10th the Four Seasons will be hosting a nightly beer garden featuring beer from a different local craft breweries each night, “summer fare” from Chef Rafael Gonzalez, and a chance to meet the brewers. Featuring Victory Brewing Company, Weyerbacher, Dock Street Brewing Company, Sly Fox Beer, and Yards Brewing this definitely worth stopping into if you are in the area.
