Explosions in the Sky‘s first-ever video, made for “Last Known Surroundings” from their latest album, Take Care, Take Care, Take Care makes me long for the Peter Gabriel “Sledgehammer,” Michael Jackson “Thriller” days of MTV. Luckily, between the first Real World and Jersey Shore, a little thing called the internet happened.  Thus the dreamy animation of “Last Known Surroundings” was able to premiere on Wired.com (via Vimeo, of course), and twelve years after their inception Explosions in the Sky finally have a music video that lives up to the quality and style of their music.

Ptarmak, a design studio out of Austin, TX, friendly with Explosions in the Sky crafted mesmerizing illustrations from Sissy Emmons and animation from David Hobizal into a space-to-land visual symphony that frame by astral frame highlights the band’s fresh instrumentals. And it looks like the innovative instrumentalists have some more artist/filmmaker friends in their bag of tricks. According to Wired, the band intends to go forward with additional videos over the next few months. Perhaps fans in upcoming tour stops will even be privy to some special audiovisual treats as Explosions in the Sky embraces a whole new art form. One can only hope.

About Allison Krumm

During the day Allison serves as the Digital Marketing and Social Media Manager at The Mann Center for the Performing Arts. At night she quite likes judging things that play in darkened theaters and cinemas, taking photos of live arts events, and attending elaborately themed costume parties cooked up with various co-conspirators. Allison has two almost (but not quite) completely useless film degrees that have taught her everything she knows about weaving tall tales. She aspires to one day be half as awesome as Patti Smith and cares not a whit about split infinitives. |
